Who they were
Vian was a mother of four who came to Norway from Iraq around 2000. She lived in Setesdal, where she had found a new partner, Olav Arnfinn Arneberg, whom she was going to marry. He still wears her ring. After repeated threats she had been given a panic alarm and her ex-husband a restraining order; she got a dog and hens so they would make noise if anyone came.
What happened
On Wednesday 2 July 2008, Vian was stabbed to death in the schoolyard of Bygland school by her ex-husband while their four children and her partner were present. She triggered her alarm, but police did not arrive in time. The ex-husband was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
