Shafilea was 17, British-Pakistani, and lived in Warrington in Cheshire.
What happened
On 11 September 2003 Shafilea was suffocated with a plastic bag in the family home after years of abuse; she had refused an arranged marriage. Her body was found in February 2004 by the River Kent in Cumbria. In August 2012 both her parents — Pakistani-born immigrants to the UK — were sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years for murder at Chester Crown Court.
