Who they were
Maïlys was 31, a psychologist who lived in Lembeek near Halle, south of Brussels, with her 18-month-old son. According to Het Nieuwsblad she had in recent years worked mainly with asylum seekers at the Belgian migration authority. Music was her great passion: she played the flute in an ensemble in Halle and taught music to children. She was visiting Stockholm and was on her way to meet friends.
What happened
On Friday 7 April 2017, a man drove a hijacked truck down the pedestrian street Drottninggatan in Stockholm. Five people were killed. In June 2018 Stockholm District Court sentenced the attacker to life imprisonment for terrorist offences and expulsion from Sweden.
Verdict / confirmation
Stockholms tingsrätt, 7 June 2018: life imprisonment for terrorist offences (5 murders, 119 attempted murders) + permanent expulsion. Not appealed.
Perpetrator: A 39-year-old Uzbek citizen whose asylum application had been rejected and who had evaded a deportation order (DN, SVT, court). Confessed to terrorist offence.
