Ignacio Echeverría

aged 39 · 🇬🇧 London · United Kingdom (victim Spanish)

Died 3 June 2017

Who they were

Ignacio, from Spain, was a financial-crime analyst at HSBC who had lived in London for eighteen months near his sister and her family. He spoke four languages, attended Mass every week, and through skateboarding befriended young people from many backgrounds, encouraging them in their studies and work. He was posthumously awarded the George Medal for his bravery.

What happened

Cycling home after a day's skateboarding, he ran to help a woman who was being attacked. On the evening of Saturday 3 June 2017, three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and then attacked people with knives around Borough Market. Eight people were killed and many injured. Police shot the attackers within ten minutes, so there was no trial; inquests in 2019 found the victims had been unlawfully killed.

Verdict / confirmation
