Hatun Sürücü
Died 7 February 2005
Who they were
Hatun was 23, Kurdish-Turkish and a single mother. She had left a forced marriage and was training to become an electrician in Berlin.
What happened
On 7 February 2005, Hatun was shot three times in the head at a bus stop near her flat in Berlin-Tempelhof. Her youngest brother confessed to killing her because he rejected her independent life. In April 2006 the Landgericht Berlin sentenced him to nine years and three months' youth custody for murder; two older brothers were acquitted. The killing sparked a wide German debate on honour-related violence and forced marriage. After serving his sentence he was deported to Turkey in 2014.
