What happened
On 14 October 2019, Franz was killed by an Afghan asylum seeker who wanted to steal his car after stabbing Red Cross worker David Hostinar to death the same day. The attacker was sentenced to life imprisonment for two murders and aggravated robbery; the Linz Higher Regional Court upheld the sentence in January 2021.
