Who they were
Banaz was 20, Iraqi Kurdish, and lived in Mitcham in south London. She had left a violent forced marriage and begun a relationship with a man of her own choosing. She repeatedly asked the police for help.
What happened
In January 2006 Banaz was murdered on the orders of her family in a so-called honour killing. Her father and uncle were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007, and three cousins were later also convicted of her murder.
