Who they were
Arnaud was 44 and a lieutenant-colonel in the gendarmerie. He was posthumously promoted to colonel and honoured with a national tribute at Les Invalides.
What happened
On 23 March 2018, Arnaud offered himself as a hostage in the Super U in Trèbes in exchange for a cashier the attacker was holding. He was fatally wounded and died during the night of 23–24 March. That day the attacker killed four people in Carcassonne and in the Super U supermarket in Trèbes. He was shot dead by the GIGN gendarmerie unit during the assault, so there was no trial.
