He Missed the Lorry Roof at Setques. He Died in Lille
A 22-year-old Sudanese man died after falling from the roof of the Setques toll on the A26 in Pas-de-Calais. He had tried to jump onto a moving lorry bound for Britain.
According to @BasilTheGreat, posting on the morning of 2 September 2026:

He attempted to jump from the top of a Calais toll booth onto a moving truck but he missed”
That is the post’s language — “illegal migrant,” “Calais toll booth.” The Saint-Omer prosecutor, speaking to AFP as carried by Le Figaro, used different words.
Around 02:40 in the night from Saturday to Sunday, “a 22-year-old man of Sudanese origin, a candidate for exile, fell from the top of the toll roof on the commune of Setques on the A26,” the prosecutor told AFP. He was taken in a critical condition, “with vital prognosis engaged,” to CHU Lille, and “died Sunday in the afternoon.” CCTV showed he “had tried to jump onto the roof of a lorry, without succeeding, falling onto the road behind the vehicle.”
Another person at the same place had, moments earlier, “succeeded in jumping” onto the roof of that vehicle. An investigation into the causes of death was opened, then closed without further action once the footage allowed the conclusion of an accident. The body was returned to the family.
France 3 Hauts-de-France, citing the same prosecutor, places the night as 29–30 August 2026 and notes that, at this stage, no other accident of this kind was known to the authorities. Figaro’s AFP copy adds the wider count: since early January, at least sixteen people have died off the French coast and three on land trying to reach the United Kingdom, by an AFP tally from official sources.
I keep Basil’s wording and the prosecutor’s wording on the same page. One says illegal. The other says Sudanese origin and candidate for exile, and that the aim was to reach England clandestinely. The place is Setques on the A26, not a booth inside Calais town. The method is a jump from a toll roof onto a moving roof. One man made it. One man did not.
A canopy over a motorway. A truck that does not slow for a human. A hospital in Lille that closes a file with a death certificate. The Channel is still there.
