A Dead Lab Worker, Sealed Hospitals and Deleted Posts: Siberia'S Plague Scare
A 28-year-old technician at Irkutsk's Anti-Plague Institute has died of what Russian officials call pneumonia of unknown cause. Almost 200 contacts are under observation, several hospitals are in quarantine, and officials have been deleting posts that mentioned plague.

She worked at an institute whose job is to fight plague. Now Moscow will not say what killed her.
Darya Shipilova, 28, a laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia, was admitted to hospital in Shelekhov, a satellite town of Irkutsk, on 29 September and died two days later, Meduza reports. Russian media gave two versions: that she returned from Thailand with pneumonic plague, or that she broke a test tube holding the plague pathogen at work. Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor says there were no accidents with dangerous microorganisms at the institute.
"Pneumonia of unknown etiology"
On Sunday the agency said she died of pneumonia of unknown origin, that no microorganisms linked to her work were found in her body, and that the situation in the Irkutsk region was "stable". Yet almost 200 of her contacts were put under medical observation, according to Izvestia and other Russian outlets cited by NBC News, and Shelekhov's mayor said the ward where she was treated had been closed. The local outlet People of Baikal reported three-week quarantines at three city hospitals and a children's hospital in Irkutsk. Masks became mandatory at the Irkutsk aluminium plant in Shelekhov.

Posts that vanished
The neighbouring head of Buryatia wrote that "the woman who died of plague" had not visited his region, then edited it to "may have died". The town of Baikalsk told residents not to travel to Shelekhov over "unofficial reports" of plague, then deleted the post. National channel REN TV removed five posts about it. Russia's chief health officer Anna Popova flew to Irkutsk in person.

How worried to be
Pneumonic plague spreads between people through droplets and kills if it is not treated fast with antibiotics. But experts quoted by NBC say person-to-person spread is actually hard.
โWe may see a few more people get infected, but the chances that this becomes a larger outbreak, let alone a global pandemic, is exceedingly low.โ

What happens next
Watch for laboratory results, any word from the WHO, and whether any of the roughly 200 contacts falls ill during the observation period.
